Stretching the frame, CVT backplate carnage - Minibike tuning part 4

Part 3 in the flathead tuning series. Today I'm replacing my VM28 with a TM28 carb and fabricate a new intake manifold, in order to fix my idling problems, and maybe get a little bit more performance out of it too. Nice update! You finally have a workshop where you don't have to bump your head on the ceiling. Good memories cladding the workshop together a few years back. I need to put those video's together for you to show off here too. And it was an amazing trip with the BMW i3 from NL to SE and back. That video took me forever to edit. Looking forward to an update on the races and engines.

    My dad had the 640 when I was around 11 or 12. He had to start it for me. I had a lot of compression. I would take it out in the field and when I was turning my knee would block the carb boot and choke it. Then I couldn’t start it by myself. He would get mad and had to go start it for me lol.

    I’ve built and raced sleds for years and I’ve said enough with the newer technology, I hate it!! Next year I’m going back to building old school muscle just because it was actually rewarding and enjoyable. Glad I found this video, nice sled , hope you’re still keeping her rolling.

    This was such a rush watching your video with your retro machines. I'm totally envious of your Blizzard and TNT models, as those were the 2 primo muscle sleds from back in the day. That Blizzard looks like a handful, with those 3 scarf sucking carbs right at your gut, and almost 800ccs growling away. Your 640 TNT is a 71? It has a great bark to that engine. I always liked the looks of the 69-70s myself, but yours is certainly very desirable. We still have my Dad's old 70 335 Olympic here. Its been sitting in the barn for the last 46 years or so. I do turn it over every once in a while to make sure it doesnt seize. But it might be time to get 'er going. Thanks for your vid, it was very entertaining. Go Retro!

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Yeah the Blizzard is bad ass, it's my number one bucket list sled and I still have a hard time believing I actually have one. The 640 is a 71 yeah. It looks like it did endurance races back in the day judging by the Swedish racing ski loops (they were mandatory) and the twist throttle was a popular mod over here for long distance racing. The pipes are Dougs pipes I think for a 72, one of them just barely touches the hood right at the air vent that 72s don't have. Really should get that dual carb setup on it some day! Take care of that Oly, if it's been sitting for that long and still turns over that sounds like it definitely has potential! Olys in stock form make really nice cruisers I think.

    I'm very much interested in your EFI projects. I have a Megasquirt project that's been on the shelf for years. Maybe your project will be the motivation to get it out and get it going again. I really like the idea od having the injectors shooting directly into the crankcase. Does it reduce reversion???

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren 7 месяцев назад

      Go for it! I went with a Link G4X Monsoon ECU because my friend is running that so I knew where to get help, otherwise may have ended up with MS too. Crankcase injection pretty much eliminates blow back, it's awesome! I have a very short intake tract and I can see some fuel made it out to about where the butterflies are, but very little. Definitely no spraying like a carbed piston port engine! I will do a video on the EFI stuff when I put it back together :)

      @@Hollaendaren because I was born and raised in Ontario. My job brought me down here. I still watch every Leaf game. Even the Polaris tripples didnt have the sound of the blizzard. Our first Skidoo was the 10 hp olympique in around 1963. I ran that till I got my TNT 440. My dad kept it and bought a 68 super 370 olympique. Fast when it ran. But was unreliable as hell. Bombardier was slow to incorporate the use of Mikuni carbs and stayed too long with the center mounted engine which hurt them in the end. In 1974 they came out with the front mounted engine chassis. The TNT free air cooled engine was pretty nice. I never owned one but I never heard anything bad. Tiloston carbs were ok as a single carb. 2 were a pain 3 were a nightmare. I actually had a small vacuum guage that I used to tune them. I miss snowmobiling.... but we got airboats down here!!! LOL

    Hi great to see new updates, what is your youtube video making workflow/software to help speed production up?

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren 8 месяцев назад

      The microphone helps a lot! So much more consistent sound levels. I also just let my camera decide what settings it wants to use, in the old shop I had to use manual settings to avoid flicker. For editing I use a recent version of Davinci Resolve on PC, it has gotten a lot of new features since I last used it. Most important probably the voice separator, my new shop is relatively echo-y but this filter fixes it, and then I use the voice leveler to get the last of the inconsistencies. All this I had to do manually before, every time I moved the volume changed and had to be corrected afterwards in editing. I've spent so many hours on sound! So basically the camera is doing the coloring work, the microphone and filters are doing the sound work. I just need to cut the clips into something that hopefully people are willing to watch and not worry about all the other stuff :)

    • @zxspectum
      @zxspectum 8 месяцев назад

      @@Hollaendaren Im using open source for a while now, although very stable I would like the audio to be automated to remove the pauses and ums and eers (not sure if the free version of Davinci does that) also I must get a better mic. At lease I am doing the same with video let it choose its defaults and have it automatically upload (Sync) to my laptop. What Mic do you use?

    • @Hollaendaren
      @Hollaendaren 8 месяцев назад

      @@zxspectumsorry for the late reply, my microphone is a Røde Wireless Go. And on top of the camera I have a Videomic Go. I use a stereo to 2x mono splitter cable to record both of them at once, the wireless records to the left channel and the directional one to the right, and I just select the one that's most appropriate in editing. And this way I have a backup if/when I forget to turn on the wireless one :)
